Please read the guidelines below and direct any questions to the high school counseling office prior to starting any community service opportunity.

What is Community Service?

Community Service is work done by a person or group of people that benefits others. It is often done near the area where you live, so your own community reaps the benefits of your work. You do not get paid to perform community service, but rather you volunteer your time.

Important Guidelines

  • Community service must be completed outside of the school day
  • Activities must benefit others in the community
  • Work must be unpaid volunteer service
  • Get approval from the counseling office before beginning if unsure
  • Keep detailed records of your hours and activities
  • Have supervisors sign off on completed hours

Examples of Qualifying Activities

  • Volunteering at local non-profit organizations
  • Helping at community events and fundraisers
  • Assisting at food banks or shelters
  • Environmental cleanup projects
  • Tutoring or mentoring younger students
  • Helping at animal shelters
  • Assisting at senior centers

What Does NOT Qualify

  • Work for family members or family businesses
  • Paid employment
  • Activities during the school day
  • Religious proselytizing (though service through religious organizations may qualify)
  • Political campaigns
