The Mathematics Department at Loveland High School offers comprehensive instruction from foundational algebra to advanced calculus, preparing students for college, careers, and real-world problem-solving.

 

Our Mission

The math courses offered at Loveland High School provide different levels of instruction to meet the needs of all students including academic support, advanced, and AP options. We are committed to developing mathematical literacy, critical thinking skills, and confidence in problem-solving.

Mathematics Program Overview

At LHS, we offer a comprehensive mathematics curriculum designed to meet students where they are and help them reach their full potential. Our courses range from foundational Algebra through Advanced Placement Calculus and Statistics, with honors and IB options available for students seeking additional challenges.

Foundational Mathematics Courses

Our foundational courses provide essential mathematical skills and build confidence for future coursework.

Core Foundational Courses:
  • Algebra 1: Linear equations, functions, graphing, and problem-solving foundations
  • Algebra 1 IB MYP: Algebra 1 content with IB Middle Years Programme approach
  • Geometry: Shapes, angles, proofs, spatial reasoning, and coordinate geometry
  • Geometry IB MYP: Geometry content with IB framework and inquiry-based learning
  • Algebra 2: Quadratic functions, polynomials, exponentials, and logarithms
  • Math Studies: Practical mathematics for students seeking alternative pathways

Honors & Accelerated Courses

Honors courses offer enhanced rigor and deeper exploration of mathematical concepts for motivated students.

Honors Course Options:
  • Algebra 1 IB MYP/Honors: Accelerated Algebra 1 with additional depth and challenge
  • Geometry IB MYP/Honors: Advanced geometry with enhanced problem-solving and proofs
  • Algebra 2 IB MYP/Honors: Rigorous Algebra 2 preparation for advanced mathematics
  • Algebra 2 Honors + AP Pre-Calculus: Accelerated pathway combining Algebra 2 Honors with AP Pre-Calculus

Honors courses provide excellent preparation for Advanced Placement and IB Diploma Programme mathematics.

Advanced Placement Courses AP

AP mathematics courses provide college-level curriculum and the opportunity to earn college credit through AP exams.

AP Course Offerings:
  • AP Pre-Calculus: Functions, polynomials, exponentials, trigonometry, and limits preparing for calculus
  • AP Calculus AB: Differential and integral calculus equivalent to a first-semester college calculus course
  • AP Calculus BC: Advanced calculus covering AB content plus additional topics equivalent to two semesters of college calculus
  • AP Statistics: Data analysis, probability, statistical inference, and experimental design

Benefits of AP Courses: College credit potential, advanced preparation, weighted GPA, and enhanced college applications.

IB Diploma Programme Mathmatics

IB Diploma Programme mathematics courses provide internationally recognized, rigorous curriculum for college-bound students.

IB DP Mathematics Options:
  • IB DP Mathematics SL (Standard Level): Comprehensive mathematics including calculus, suitable for most college majors
  • IB DP Mathematics HL (Higher Level): Advanced mathematics with greater depth and breadth for STEM-focused students
  • IB DP Math Applications and Interpretations HL: Focuses on practical applications, modeling, and statistics
  • IB DP Math Analysis and Approaches HL: Emphasizes theoretical mathematics, proofs, and abstract thinking

IB courses are two-year programs for 11th and 12th grade students pursuing the IB Diploma.

Specialized Mathematics Courses

Specialized courses connect mathematics to real-world applications and specific career interests.

Specialized Course Options:
  • Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications: Algebra concepts applied to personal finance, investing, loans, and business mathematics
  • AP Statistics: Data-driven decision making, probability, and statistical analysis for science and social science applications
